National Voter Registration Act ( NVRA ) Information

In 1993, Congress adopted the National Voter Registration Act, "NVRA", which was then signed into law by President William J. Clinton. The Act enhances voting opportunities. It provides a national mail-in registration form. It also increases the number of governmental offices and agencies where eligible persons can apply to register or to update their voter registration records at the same as they are seeking governmental or public services or benefits. Florida adopted these major provisions in 1995 into the Florida Voter Registration Act, "FVRA", which then-Governor Lawton Chiles signed. The Act has four purposes:

  • To increase the number of registered voters;
  • To enhance voter participation;
  • To protect election integrity; and
  • To ensure states maintain accurate voter rolls
